What's Happening With Medicaid & What Can We Do?
3:30pm - 5:30pm

The new Medicaid work requirement comes into effect on January 1, 2027, and it can limit people's ability to access health insurance and subsidies for non-compliance. Franklin and Essex County have 23,000 Medicaid enrollees, so those who don't qualify for an exemption will need to meet a 20-hour per week work requirement to maintain their health insurance.

If 200 people suddenly entered the workforce in our area, requiring 960 hours per year, earning $15.50 per hour, local businesses would be looking at $2,976,000 in labor expenses, taxes not included. If we can't meet the demand, 200 of our closest friends, family members, and neighbors risk losing their access to health insurance.

Fortunately, we have time to prepare, and an opportunity to promote economic development throughout our community. I'm proposing the establishment of businesses and workforce development initiatives designed to help individuals thrive, by supporting their mental, emotional, and social needs as they learn to navigate their new role. This can be a pathway to entrepreneurship for people to learn the skills needed to bring the services and products that will enhance our experience of life in the Adirondacks.

If any of this sounds interesting, and you'd like to learn more or figure out how you can offer your expertise, come check it out.
